UW Update 4/14/15

1.     UW Update 4/14/15
a.     Woke, ate a Clif bar while reading The Martian, went to the physics complex for machine shop class.
b.     Our aged, experienced trainer Ron described several sets of measuring tools, showed us the materials room where you can buy raw metal/plastic blocks/piping/fasteners at below cost. Described some things we’d be doing in the rest of the class. Should be fun!
c.      Walked with Matt, a guy I knew from Lunchbox, for a bit. Talked about his experience with CS before he switched to physics and his current research position.
d.     Intended to do phys homework, but looked at my calendar and saw an entrepreneurship minor open house in half an hour in Dempsey. Walked there while madly texting to coordinate lunch with Ayush and plan a tour of the 2104 house with Brandon and Xin.
e.     Only 3 people there for the entre open house! Sounded pretty cool—you take an accelerated accounting course and one quarter of microeconomics, then you get to take two classes where you design and attempt to run a company, plus an elective specialization in software, marketing, etc. The “Create a Company I & II” classes sound neat and very hands-on. These would satisfy the Lavin program’s entrepreneurship classes requirement, and I definitely think I should apply to Lavin next year, for the crazy networking leverage if nothing else.
f.      Met Ayush at the HUB. Ate outside. We talked about his experiences plugging together different APIs (sounded very labor- and research- intensive) to get the tutoring app to work. Very interesting. He tried to convince me to apply to Lavin.
g.     Did some hw. Went with Brandon (Xin in EE lab) to 2104 house. Very nice residents gave us full tour. I really liked the community atmosphere (no way in Haggett would 40% of the resident population be hanging in rooms or common spaces, ready to talk or give tours to random people, at 4:30 pm). Everything looked really nice, except the rooms were very irregular. You could get a small room, or a large one, one facing traffic or a quiet street, etc. just luck of the draw. Might be hard to pitch Xin on that.
h.     Did a bit more hw, then went to glee club. Really improved on a couple of the songs because the uber-competent club president Jonah chose to sing second tenor for the day. (He can read music that well J).
i.       Ate dinner with Paul at the 8.
j.       Went to Honors study abroad open house. Less of open house than presentation plus panel, but it was pretty interesting. Got a useful overview and some good leads to follow up on.
k.     Grabbed bananas, returned to dorm. Finished phys hw. Shot around at Denny. Grabbed a small Sammy at Rick’s, read the Martian for a bit. Looked briefly at the Global Experience community in Haggett.
l.       Looked through all the pages of the returning resident housing application. Put in tentative answers, completely neglecting part where I would select Xin and Brandon as roommates. Pressed next>> on the agreement signing screen, the same button that I had pressed on every other screen, and was horrified to find that this action submitted the application! I quickly canceled the application, but now I can’t submit it again! Sent an email to HFS asking to reapply like they asked, and plan to call in the morning. Quite a shock, and definitely introduces unnecessary hassle. I’m pretty angry at HFS for not having a “submit” button, or a review screen, or even a way of seeing how many pages there are on the application without manually next>>ing through the pages.

m.   Wrote this log, then took a shower to clear my mind. Hit the hay.
