UW Update Tuesday 5/5/15

1.     UW Update Tuesday 5/5/15
a.     Machine shop. We got to use the lathe today, which was super cool. A lathe rotates your part against a blade to make anything with radial symmetry—like a supercharged potter’s wheel for metal.
b.     Returned to Haggett, finished physics prelab.
c.      Checked in at the business advising office. Yes, the WCC version of microeconomics that I saw is being offered in the summer does transfer as Econ 200, and thus satisfies entrepreneurship minor prereqs.
d.     Went to this “Data Science Seminar” I saw advertised in the physics elevator. Turns out this is a recurring thing. It was pretty interesting—lots of data on peer influence in social networks. If you give an article a random initial upvote or downvote, how does this impact the future probability of upvote or downvote? Almost fundamental research, but with complications thrown in. Sounds like the bulk of the work is statistics/finding a company willing to let you do large-scale experiments on their users J
e.     Walked through Red Square to get lunch in the HUB. There was a live mariachi band playing, which was neat.
f.      Finished Diaspora (super majestic) and did some physics hw. Met with Johan, Katie, Daniel in CSE atrium, introduced John from physics. We worked on practice problems for the midterm.
g.     Went to Glee Club. I sang well, which made me happy. Dr. Boers pointed out how much I’d improved from the beginning of last quarter.
h.     Went to the CSE labs for a Cinco de Mayo dinner at Chipotle. Walked over with Johan, Mike from Cows last quarter, and one of my teammates from the programming competition of Autumn quarter. Met a bunch of new people, including a Math/CS double major, Peter. After dinner, I got to pitch a bunch of my event ideas to the ACM officer in charge of events, which was cool.

i.       Returned to Haggett. Did CS homework. Shot hoops at Denny, then grabbed Rick’s and ate it in the lounge. Showered, wrote this log, hit the hay.
