UW Update Wednesday 4/8/15

1.     UW Update Wednesday 4/8/15
a.     Another Leroy day! The past seven days have been among the most interesting and exciting days of the entire UW journey.
b.     Woke, grabbed a banana and moved out. Physics: looked at quantum effects on macroscopic effects, reviewed strange connections to relativity and relativistic momentum (apparently reflects that matter and energy are but two aspects of the same thing).
c.      Linear: Very boring lecture on vectors (just because I’d seen it all twice before, in Calc 3 and Physics). All my exploring/broadening tricks to stay alert were to no avail, and I went into a strange mode. Everything faded into the background a bit. We had our first quiz—easy, but very little time. I made one mistake in the calculation, didn’t have time to correct it, but asserted I knew I made it.
d.     Returned to the physics complex for lab. The lab was actually super cool. We had a frequency generator and a string under tension from some weights, and basically messed with all the parameters to see what would happen.
e.     Signed up for Humans vs. Zombies in the quad (finally!)
f.      CSE311. We talked about predicate logic, with objects within domains as variables. Statements like There exists X for all Y such that X is prime and X is greater than Y (a calculus-like expression of the idea that there are infinitely many primes).
g.     Ate lunch with Johan and one of his buddies, Abusheik. Abusheik was planning a startup in India with his fashion-designer sister to make customized dresses in 20 minutes. Order, get automatically fitted, and 20min later, out comes your party dress! Pretty interesting. Talked about different aspects of the business. Abusheik’s biggest technical problem was to program a sewing machine that could deliver consistent, “seamless” work.
h.     Returned to dorm. Picked up my shin guards, put them on and my cleats. Got my stuff together and headed to the IMA fields. Met the Free Agents, stretched a bit. Actually volunteered to play keeper since nobody else felt up to it. The game was a lot of fun, although we lost 1-3 (mostly due to strategy issues J). I think everybody liked my aggressive keeper style, even though I missed a few shots.
i.       Returned to dorm, did a bunch of maintenance stuff.
j.       Went on a run with Johan to Laurelhurst. Got into a long discussion about inequality that segued into a discussion of education through Johan’s tutoring job that focused on wealthy students. Lost any hope of going to the HSAP Game Night, which was fine. We both showered, then tried to get dinner at the 8, but Johan didn’t realize only Pagliacci’s was open. So we went to the Ave. SomTamThai was sadly closed, so we ended up eating at this crazy place called Hawaii BBQ. So much (extravagantly fried) food, and well-priced!
k.     I sprinted along Johan’s bike to the CS labs, where Johan finished his homework. I continued trying to set up Git, and got quite a shock when I messed up a command line command and deleted the Mac’s Pictures directory! Fortunately everything was backed up in OneDrive. Continued figuring out exactly what not to do with Git, and resolved to talk to Issa to figure out how he did things.
l.       Returned to dorm. Johan had pitched this crazy idea of running a math/CS camp over part of the summer, using his tutoring connections, which I liked, and we chatted for a bit, wondering if there was any way to integrate the idea with my plans to do homeschool classes over the summer.

m.   Bought my Bolt Bus ticket home for Friday, dealt with email (sent Johan articles), wrote this log, and went to bed (way too late!).
