1. UW
Update Thursday 1/8/15
a. Woke
up bright and early for physics tutorial. Same nice TA’s. Working on electric
fields.
b. Went
straightaway to cow class. Realized quickly I’d done the wrong reading, so that
was a little stressful. But I think I still managed to contribute.
c. Ate
lunch in HUB. Was joined by Xin and Nafisa.
d. Went
looking for book with Lascaux cave images (Professor Walker thought students
could get more by looking at a book than images online, which I’m not sure I
agree with)
i. Started
at the Art Library. They referred me to Suzzallo, where the anthropology
collection is housed.
ii. Went
to Suzzallo, through several reference desks that directed me to a simple
catalog search (should have done that first, but I have been conditioned to
think librarians have magic extra info).
iii. Finally
figured out cataloguing system, looked in about five places the books were said
to be scattered. Found lots of books on prehistoric art, weaponry, etc; but
they were all primarily detailed academic analyses, not simple collections of
pictures.
iv. Found
a cool media center on the third floor of Suzzallo that rents movies, audio,
etc.
v. Finally
returned to the Art Library, the last place seen in the catalog search. Lo and
behold, a book with some images. Checked it out and returned to the dorm. Got a
little studying in before Jamie returned; read interesting article on whether
plant and animal domestication are related for cow class.
vi. Went
out and played Frisbee before the sun set.
vii. Got
a little more studying done, then went to Glee Club meeting. We practiced
songs, including the crazy asynchronous rhythm of Sir Duke. My music-reading
practice helped, but not with Sir Duke J
viii.
Went to a slightly upscale place, Schultzy’s,
pitching itself as a pub on the Ave, a Glee Club tradition. Ate sausages,
conversed with a friendly Industrial Engineering major, Sean.
ix. Sang
a few songs, paid, then booked it to film club. Forgot my backpack at Schultzy’s;
by the time I had gone back and grabbed my backpack, my cold-depleted stamina
had started to drain.
x. Watched
a bizarre movie called Frank about this guy who joins a band of misfits with
mental illnesses. Felt a little bit like Grandpa had said that he felt about
Little Miss Sunshine over winter break—why am I watching a movie about the
failings of humanity and the darkness and instability of our unconscious minds?
xi. My
faith in humanity was restored by a brisk physics reading session in the
lounge, interrupted by an argument with Jade and August over some probably
meaningless philosophical terms. Talked a bit with everyone, then
xii. Brushed
teeth, wrote log, went to bed.
