a. Friday!
i. Pack
up and start the long drive to Kalispell. Stop at a lodge café in the middle of
nowhere for lunch—it’s tasty though expensive as usual. Keep driving for a good
while—I work on my journal and read the misleadingly titled Sandman, the Overture, which is not the
first, or even a middle or the last, sandman novel; it’s lifted out of the
chronology entirely. The story doesn’t make a whole ton of sense but the art is
AMAZING. Wonder @Grace if you’ve checked it out.
ii. Stop
at a hot springs for a break. It’s really nice. I finally overcome my age-old fear
of opening my eyes underwater, and use my newfound vision to swim across the
pool underwater without smashing my head on the wall on the opposite side
(another age-old and more justified fear of mine).
iii. Drive
straight through to Kalispell. Miss the first half of the intro lesson, but
soon we are settled in and dancing in the main venue, the hotel ballroom.
iv. After
the intro lesson is the main dance; we’re introduced to the band, Slipdisc.
They’re really good—a base player, little old lady on the giant upright base—a
trumpet player, a clarinet player, a guitarist, and a dude on the vibraphone.
And after the main dance is late night—everyone moves to a sweet little
ballroom (the Sassafras ballroom) in downtown Kalispell. At this point, I’m
really getting into it.
v. We
hit the hay pretty late—I’m camping out on a hide-away in Daniel’s room. Before
we retire, we hit the grocery store and get some snacks; we chow down on
avocado, cheese and hummus rolls.
